A summer figure skating competition in Troy is expected to pump more than $1 million into the local economy.

The Troy Skating Club will host the National and International Theater on Ice Competition at Hobart Arena. The event, slated to take place June 24 through 26, will draw nearly 1,000 athletes and spectators, according to the Miami County Visitors Bureau.

Theatre on Ice is a U.S. Figure Skating discipline using all aspects of figure skating. Performances contain a theme, music, choreography, interaction among skaters, costumes, props, and scenery. The competition is expected to draw more than 30 teams. Tickets are $15 per day or $35 for an all-event pass.

Troy Skating Club recently established the Miami Valley Theatre on Ice team with 16 skaters from the Dayton area.

In July, the Troy Skating Club will host its 35th annual summer competition with 200 skaters from the tri-state area competing.

A team of special needs synchronized skaters from FAR Conservatory will perform during a show by the Detroit Skating Club at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Detroit Skating Club Ice Arena, 888 Denison Court in Bloomfield Hills.

They will perform to music done by Michigan artists such as Smokey Robinson and Iggy Pop.

The FAR Conservatory Special Olympics athletes and skating team are a part of FAR Conservatory of Therapeutic and Performing Arts, which has been encouraging special athletes in ice hockey and figure skating for more than 55 years. They are a skating team of special needs athletes who skate for fun, recreation and the thrill of competition.

Variety FAR Conservatory is a nonprofit organization serving 2,000 children and adults with special needs in southeast Michigan by providing them therapeutic programs in sports, art, music, dance and recreation. These therapies help those with special needs to foster self-awareness and personal growth by increasing self-esteem, building positive social skills and enhancing motor coordination. One-third of these students could not participate without scholarship assistance from civic-minded businesses and organizations.

There will be 26 tables set up in the on-ice seating area and mezzanine. These tables will seat two to five guests and include two bottles of wine, cheese, crackers, fruit, petite soiree's, admission for all, a program, and Pellegrino water at intermission. Proceeds will benefit the Detroit Skating Club Ice Show, and FAR Conservatory is the beneficiary of the Saturday show. The tables cost $95 to $250.

For more information on FAR Conservatory and its recreational programs, contact the FAR office at 248-646-3347 or visit www.farconservatory.org.
