Figure Skating takes second in nationals - Dartmouth

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 11:28 PM PDT

The Dartmouth Figure Skating Team took second place at the 2010 U.S. Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team Championships this past weekend in Newark, Delaware.

After winning nine individual events on Saturday, Dartmouth entered Sunday in third place — only five points behind the University of Delaware. After a dramatic second day of skating, the Big Green managed to pull away from Delaware to claim second place. Boston University claimed first place by a margin of 14 points.

Overall, it was a successful competition and the team was able to improve from their 2009 third place finish, which saw key wins in multiple freestyle and dance events.

Dartmouth qualified for nationals by competing at smaller events throughout the year. The team earned points based on their finishes at the smaller events, which were enough to qualify for the nine-team national championship.

The event concluded the Big Green's season and was the last competition for seniors Vanessa Szalapski '10, Tenley Brownwright '10 and co-captain Natalie Falsgraf '10. All three have made significant contributions to the team throughout their four years of figure skating at Dartmouth.

"I was so pleased with how the team skated and to have my last competition be with such a supportive team," Falsgraf said in an e-mail to the Dartmouth. "We had a great showing — the strongest appearance by the Dartmouth team in recent memory."

Dartmouth has made an appearance at every national championship since the Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team Championships were established ten years ago.
