Posted: 15 May 2010 04:44 AM PDT

Four remaining couples face off in the semifinals of "Dancing with the Stars," performing one new Ballroom and one new Latin dance to determine which three couples will make it to the finals, MONDAY, MAY 17 (8:00-9:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

On TUESDAY, MAY 18 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on "Dancing with the Stars the Results Show," multiplatinum recording artist and actress Miley Cyrus will perform the live television debut of her new hit single, "Can't Be Tamed," from her upcoming album releasing June 22 on Hollywood Records. The youngest-ever recording artist with five chart topping debuts, Cyrus has sold over 15 million records, including the EP, "The Time of Our Lives," which featured her No. 1 hit, "Party in the USA."

Also performing a medley of her new single, "Loving You is Easy," and her classic, "Angel," on Tuesday is groundbreaking, Grammy Award-winning, multiplatinum recording artist Sarah McLachlan. Accompanying her on the dance floor will be pros Jonathan, Anna, Kym, Dmitry, Damian and Lacey. McLachlan releases her new album, "Laws of Illusion," on June 15th -- her first studio album of brand new songs in seven years -- on Arista Records. She has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide since her recording career began in 1988 with her debut album. Each and every one of her albums has been certified Gold or Platinum. McLachlan's public service announcement created to benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has raised a record-breaking $30 million and is considered one of the most successful fundraising efforts ever. In 1997, as co-founder of Lilith Fair (www.lilithfair.com), a celebration of women in music, she kick-started an entire cultural movement when told that there was no audience for touring female musicians. Lilith brought together nearly two million people over its three-year history (1997-1999) and raised more than $10 million for charities, benefiting women's shelters along the tour route. After 11 years, Lilith makes its return with a 36-city summer tour from June 27 through August 16.

In the final "Macy's Stars of Dance" performance of the season, the Macy's Design-a-Dance will feature the song, celebrities and costume design selected by the public through votes on abc.com. The dance will feature a spectacular performance by Season 6's Melissa Rycroft and Season 4's Joey Fatone doing the tango to "Rock 'n Roll All Nite" by KISS, wearing the winning costume design.

Tuesday's show will also mark the second of three weeks of the "DWTS" college competition, in which dance teams of 8-10 members from two universities compete against one another in a formation ballroom showdown. This week, troops from Utah Valley University (Orem, UT) and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (Newark/New Brunswick/Camden, NJ), will face off on the floor with 50 students from each school in attendance to cheer them on. Following this second round, viewers will be asked to vote to determine the winner of the week's heat. Viewers can vote via phone and on abc.com. In the third and final week of the college contest, the victors from each week will compete against one another, with the final winning team to be chosen by judges Carrie Ann, Len and Bruno.

Victoria to host Canadian figure skating championships in January - Big Hollywood

Posted: 12 May 2010 12:54 PM PDT

VICTORIA - Fans dazzled by figure skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will have a chance to see more of the sport when two Canadian championships are held in Victoria in January.

The B.C. capital will host the 2011 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships and the 2011 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals, Skate Canada said Wednesday.

More than 250 skaters are expected to compete in the two events, which will be held at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

"British Columbia has been a very special place for Canadian skaters these past several years," William Thompson, Skate Canada's chief executive officer, said in a release. "We are delighted to bring these two events here and to continue such a wonderful tradition of Canadian skating in Victoria."

The junior nationals will be held Jan. 17-20. The Canadian championships will be Jan. 21-23.

Victoria previously hosted the Canadian championships in 1978 and Victoria was also the site of Skate Canada International in 1992 and 2006.

"Fans here will truly have the best of both worlds," said Thompson. "They will see some of the top skaters in the world, including our Olympic champions and world medallists compete.

"And, as we begin the next quadrennial in our spot, people will also see a preview of the talented skaters who will go on to represent Canada on the world stage and at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games."

Skaters at the competition will be vying for spots on the Skate Canada national team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2011 ISU world figure skating championships, the ISU Four Continents skating championships 2011 and the 2011 ISU world junior championships.

Tickets for the events will go on sale in mid-June.

2011 Canadian figure skating championships coming to Victoria - Abbotsford News

Posted: 13 May 2010 04:39 AM PDT

Fighting through the emotions of family tragedy, she charmed the sympathetic crowd at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. And on Tuesday she charmed the crowd of Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre during the Stars on Ice show.

But on Wednesday, Joanie Rochette used her charm to explain her decision to focus on a "complete life" with more time dedicated to school and family.

Translated, Rochette may or may not be competing when the 2011 Canadian Figure Skating Championhips take place in Victoria, Jan. 17-23.

"It would be hard to leave skating at a time when it's so popular," said the 24-year-old who bronze at the Olympic Games, adding she'll be training hard for a professional event this fall and will make the rest of her season's decisions after that.

"It's been a busy time. My luggage from the Olympics is still unpacked."

It's the third time Victoria has hosted the national championships, held here in 1978 and 1988. Victoria also hosted Skate Canada internationals in 1984, 1992 and 2006. Come January 2011 both the national championships and Skate Canada Junior Nationals will happen at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Up-and-coming ice dance pair Leonardo and Pilar Maekawa from the Racquet Club of Victoria are one of Victoria's best shots at local representation.

Release from Skate Canada:

"British Columbia has been a very special place for Canadian skaters these past several years. We are delighted to bring these two events here and to continue such a wonderful tradition of Canadian skating in Victoria," said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO. "The various organizations within the city have come together to bid to host this event, and we know that the volunteers and fans will have a warm reception for the over 250 athletes who will compete here in 2011."

This will be the third time the city has hosted the senior event. It was held here in 1978 and 1988. Victoria was also the site of Skate Canada International in 1984, 1992 and 2006.

"Fans here will truly have the best of both worlds. They will see some of the top skaters in the world, including our Olympic Champions and world medalists compete," continued Thompson.

"And, as we begin the next quadrennial in our sport, people will also see a preview of the talented skaters who will go on to represent Canada on the world stage and at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games."

"I would like to thank Skate Canada for recognizing Victoria's reputation for being a great sport host and for awarding the city the 2011 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships and BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals," said B.C. Minister of Healthy Living and Sport. "We have the expertise, great facilities, community support and a very knowledgeable and sports-minded volunteer base to put on a first-class event and we can't wait to welcome Canada's best skaters back to Victoria."

"We are excited that Victoria, British Columbia's capital, has been chosen as the site for the 2011 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships," said Mike Suzuki, Vice-President, Vancouver Island District, BMO Bank of Montreal. "This is the 15th year BMO's been the title sponsor, and our 300 Vancouver Island employees are looking forward to welcoming skating fans from across the country," Mr. Suzuki added.

"Tourism Victoria and SportHost Victoria are thrilled that Victoria has been chosen to host the 2011 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships and the 2011 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals," said Helen Welch, Vice President, Marketing, Tourism Victoria. "We have strong record of hosting great events and this will be no exception! Major sporting events are a boon to our local economy and an event of this size will have a significant positive impact on the tourism industry."

All-event ticket packages for the events will go on sale in mid-June.

Approximately 260 skaters in the women's, men's, pair and ice dance disciplines will compete at the senior, junior and novice levels at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships and the BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals. Athletes will vie for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2011 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2011 and the 2011 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
