2010 World Figure Skating Championships Predictions - Associated Content

Posted: 19 Mar 2010 10:34 PM PDT

Intriguing storylines and inspirational performances are duly expected at the 2010 World Figure Skating Championships. Despite high-profile withdrawals of several top male and female skaters (namely gold  medalist Evan Lysacek and Canada's Joannie Rochette), the annual event still enjoys a tremendous field headlined by newly crowned queen of figure skating Kim Yu Na and her rival Mao Asada of Japan. On the men's side, the 2010 Worlds will be the most open competition in history as there are more than a dozen skaters who have a shot at winning the coveted title. In this article, I will preview this year's Worlds and offer my predictions on which man and woman will win the 2010 World Figure Skating Championships.

1. Ladies' Figure Skating Worlds 2010
Prediction: Kim Yu Na wins again; Mao Asada and Miki Ando attempt a quad.

Lots of history was made in the ladies' event at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Kim Yu Na became the first Korean in history to win a gold medal in figure skating, and she achieved it in record-shattering fashion. Kim's chief rival, Mao Asada, earned the marvelous distinction as the first woman to land three triple axels in one competition. Finally, Canada's Joannie Rochette overcame the sudden loss of her mother in winning a bronze medal on home soil. One should expect even more history will be made at the 2010 World Figure Skating Championships.

Thin Ice judges talk about ABC figure skating ... - Examiner

Posted: 19 Mar 2010 06:38 PM PDT

Thin Ice on ABC is a a figure skating competition featuring some of the greatest prop skaters in the world in a special airing on March 19 and 21, 2010. Elisabeth Hasselbeck and urt Browning co-host the competition, which is judged by Olympic champions Dick Burton, Katarina Witt and Kristi Yamaguchi.

The judges include ice skating legend Katarina Witt, two-time Olympic Champion and four-time World Champion; Kristi Yamaguchi, 1992 Olympic gold medalist and Season Six champ of "Dancing with the Stars"; and Dick Button, two-time Olympic gold medalist and the voice of figure skating on American television for 45 years.

Recently Thin Ice judges Kristi Yamaguchee, Richard Burton and Katarina Witt took part in in a conference call interview with columnists. In part of the interview, they weighed in on the competition and how the judging would work in Thin Ice.

Kristi Yamaguchi: I think – I don't know. Hopefully, I can come up with my own – my own identity, I guess. But you know I think I want to – there's two nights of competition. So, obviously, on the first night if you can say something constructive that they can maybe think about for the second night would be helpful. So you know hopefully you know – I mean, we are looking at an incredibly high level of skaters here so I don't think there'll be anything too terrible to say to them.

Richard Button: Well, as far as – as far as what we say to them, I – Terry, would we be doing our usual – I mean, the kind of comments that we can make as to why we're giving them such and such a point?

Terry O'Neil
: Sure. It's very close to the format of 'Dancing With The Stars'.

Richard Button
: I got it. Well, then I must say that I certainly have every intention of commenting on what I think is right and what I think is wrong. I mean, I think that's what the audience likes to hear and they already have seen that themselves, and if we see something that they haven't seen, I think it's helpful. I'd like very much to be able to be perfectly honest with what we see is happening and certainly in no way sugar coated.

Katarina Witt: Yes, I think the same. You know, we all are going to say what we would like to address, and I don't think we have to slip into characters. We all have our own character, and I guess you know like Kristi and like Dick are saying you know we're just going to address it the way we see it.

Richard Button:
I also think it's extremely – can be extremely difficult for a judge to sit there looking at three people, or two people rather that they know very well and then telling them what they think. You know that's tough. It's quite different from 'Idol' in the sense that these are anonymous people.

In other words, Kristi Yamaguchi in 'Dancing With The Stars' is not anonymous to the audience, but she is not – probably, I assume, not a personal friend of the three judges. And in this case, we are friends and know very well these people, and it makes it tough to sit there and (inaudible) you forgot to tie up your shoe laces you know. So that it's not an easy scene for us, but I think that certainly from my point of view, at any rate, we will be perfectly clear and honest, positive, and negative.

Area briefs: U.S. Figure Skating site has new look for ... - Greensboro News & Record

Posted: 18 Mar 2010 11:54 PM PDT

U.S. Figure Skating announced the relaunch of northcarolina2011.com, the official Web site of the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum.

"The relaunch of the Web site is an exciting reminder that the U.S. Figure Skating Championships are now less than 11 months away," said Hill Carrow, chairman of the 2011 championships. "The new look of the Web site, as well as the additional content, provides added momentum as we work toward the arrival of this major event in Greensboro."

BEM Interactive, official Web marketing firm of the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, completed the redesign. A mobile platform also was created to allow the site to be tailored to viewing on mobile devices.

"Digital marketing initiatives will ramp up in the coming weeks including aggressive search and social marketing campaigns," said Malinda Pengelly, president of BEM Interactive. "Targeted email campaigns and opt-in text messaging will keep fans up to date on events as they occur."

The 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships are Jan. 22-30. This will be the first time in the event's 96-year history that it will be held in North Carolina and the first time all three major components of the championships -- competition, practice and FanFest -- will take place at one venue.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

NORTH CAROLINA 5, UNCG 1: Despite senior catcher Whitney Sirois' first home run, the Spartans (8-14) fell to the Tar Heels (19-6) in Greensboro.single to bring in the game's first run.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

PRINCETON 5, N.C. A&T 3: The Tigers (2-8) took advantage of four Aggies errors to build a five-run lead, then held off A&T (6-10) at War Memorial Stadium.

Center fielder Xavier Macklin continued to lead the Aggies' offense, going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. A&T starter Nick Rogers (3-2) held Princeton to two hits in six innings, but was undone by four walks and shoddy defense.

RHODES 7, GREENSBORO 5: Vince Grasso and Josh Montague had three hits each for the Pride (7-14), but the Lynx (14-6) still halted Greensboro's three-game win streak.

UNCG 12, HARVARD 7: Corey Overholtzer broke a tie with a two-run single in the eighth inning and Ed Jayjack put the game out of reach with a grand slam off the scoreboard in right field to lift the Spartans (11-5) over the Crimson (3-7) in Greensboro.

Overholtzer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Jayjack went 2-for-3 with six RBIs.

OUTDOORS

HATCHERY-SUPPORTED TROUT OPENER: The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open approximately 1,000 miles of hatchery-supported trout waters in 25 western counties at 7 a.m. April 3. The season will run until 30 minutes after sunset Feb. 28, 2011.

While fishing on hatchery-supported trout waters, anglers can harvest a maximum of seven trout per day, with no minimum size and no bait restrictions.

Hatchery-supported trout waters, marked by green-and-white signs, are stocked repeatedly from March until August every year. Many of these waters are stocked monthly, although some heavily fished waters are stocked more frequently.

For a detailed list of hatchery-supported trout waters and regulation information, as well as trout maps and weekly stocking summaries on hatchery-supported trout waters, visit the commission's Web site at www.ncwildlife.org/fishing.

Note that weekly stocking information appears online for only seven days and that updates are posted Fridays after trout are stocked.
